March 8th marks International Women's Day [1] (IWD). At MoonBrew, we draw inspiration from the women around us every day from our valued customers to the incredible women who work behind the scenes at MoonBrew. They are the trailblazers, the changemakers, and the everyday heroes who inspire us to continue our mission to solve sleep.
This year’s theme for IWD is “Accelerate Action.” [2] Whether it’s at work, at home, or in their personal lives, women are doing it all and it’s times like IWD where we can take a moment to pause and reflect on the concerted efforts that we are making to advance women worldwide.
From puberty to menopause, women face a range of challenges, from bodily changes to societal pressures (so on and so forth). The expectation to meet unrealistic beauty standards, endure fad diets, and manage a number of responsibilities is ever-present.
Equal access to women's health [3] is a fundamental value that lies at the heart of MoonBrew’s mission.
What Do The MoonBrew Team Have to Say?
We asked our team at MoonBrew what this year’s IWD theme, "Accelerate Action," meant to them. Here’s what they had to say:
Rachel Obsert – VP of Product and Operations
“Accelerating action means giving women the space and tools to create real change. It’s about shifting the conversation from potential to action, and empowering women to step up and make their mark.”
Alicia Beggs – Director of Growth
“For me, it’s about creating tangible progress in both our personal lives and in society. The world is full of challenges, but with action and determination we can overcome them and push forward.”
Kendall Kransdorf – Director of Product
“To me, ‘Accelerate Action’ means removing the barriers that have historically held women back. It’s about taking steps today that will make tomorrow better for women everywhere.”
Catherine Lee – Marketing Manager
“It’s time to challenge the status quo. To accelerate action is to stand up, speak out, and ensure that women’s voices are heard and valued in every space.”
Alice Oremenze – Head of Graphic Design
“Creativity is a form of action. As women, we can accelerate change through our ability to innovate and express ourselves. It’s all about finding new solutions and making bold moves.”
Maryellen Petrucci – Graphic Designer
“For me, accelerating action means prioritizing self-care while also pushing for broader social change. Women’s health and well-being need to be central to the conversation.”
Georgia Raddon – Content Manager
“Action is not just about big, visible steps, it’s also about the quiet acts of resistance and resilience. Women are constantly evolving, and accelerating that evolution is essential.”
Common Sleep Issues that Women Struggle With
How Many Hours of Sleep Should Women Be Getting?
Women generally need an additional 11 minutes of sleep compared to men [4]. Research suggests that women need more sleep due to differences in brain activity, hormonal fluctuations, and the multiple roles they often juggle in daily life. However, despite needing more rest, women are more likely to experience sleep disruptions [5].
Why Has My Sleep Changed?
Hormonal shifts due to menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum changes, and menopause can all impact sleep quality. Stress and lifestyle changes also play a significant role.
Why Am I Getting Hot Flushes When I Sleep?
Hot flushes [6] notoriously disrupt sleep and are common during menopause. They occur due to fluctuations in estrogen levels, affecting the body’s temperature regulation. Managing sleep environment factors, such as keeping a cool room and using moisture-wicking bedding, can help alleviate discomfort.
How Do I Know If I'm Experiencing Hormonal Issues?
Signs of hormonal imbalance include irregular sleep patterns, night sweats, mood swings, and fatigue. If sleep disturbances persist, consulting a healthcare professional can help identify underlying causes and solutions.
Do I Have Restless Leg Syndrome
Women struggle with restless leg syndrome [7] (RLS) more than men. This is particularly common during pregnancy due to changes in iron levels and circulation. RLS can cause discomfort and an irresistible urge to move the legs, making it harder to fall and stay asleep.
