Heat waves and high nighttime temperatures can ruin good sleep. When your body can’t cool down, it delays melatonin production—the hormone that helps you sleep. Here’s how to beat the heat, beyond just blasting the AC.

1. Take a Lukewarm Shower Before Bed

Why it works: A warm—not cold—shower boosts circulation to the skin, helping your body release heat. Studies show that this helps lower core temperature and improves sleep onset. Cold showers, on the other hand, can actually worsen sleep by raising your heart rate and triggering your body to release fight-or-flight hormones just as you're getting ready for bed.

2.  Ditch the Socks (Unless They’re Cold)

Why it works: When it’s cold, socks help redistribute heat and aid sleep. But in summer, warm feet can keep your whole body hot. If the temperatures are climbing, sleep without socks and help your body stay cool all night.

Bonus: If you’re used to sleeping with socks on, try lightly chilled socks. Toss your socks in the freezer for a couple of minutes and instantly lower your body temperature.

3. Eat Light, Sleep Right

Why it works: Eating heavy meals raises both your metabolism and your body temperature. New research even found that eating large or fatty meals at bedtime can cause fragmented sleep. So instead of big portions this summer, have something light.

Bonus: Be mindful of both what and when you're eating. Experts agree that you should keep your last meal 2 to 3 hours before bed. This avoids sugar spikes and sugar crashes that could disrupt your sleep.

4. Get Sunlight Early, Not Late

Why it works: Your circadian rhythm is regulated by light exposure. By getting lots of morning sunlight, you can keep your internal clock aligned. With your internal clock in order, your body knows when to wind down—even when it’s hot out.

5. Switch to Breathable Bedding

Why it works: Dense or synthetic materials trap heat and moisture, preventing your body from cooling off. But, natural fibers like linen, bamboo, or light cotton have better air flow and allow your body to dissipate heat.

6. Sleep in a Starfish Position

Why it works: As funny as it sounds, spreading out your limbs increases surface area, helping your body release heat more efficiently. The “starfish” (on your back, arms and legs apart) is one of the coolest sleeping positions, reducing contact points and promoting airflow around your body.

7. Sip a Cold, Natural Sleep Drink

Why it works: Ingredients like magnesium, L-Theanine, and chamomile have been clinically proven to improve sleep. On top of that, drinking them cold helps cool your core temperature for cooler sleep.
